New York Soda Size Limit Statute Barred by State Judge

New York Soda Size Limit Statute Barred by State Judge

New York City’s ban on large-size soda drinks won’t take effect tomorrow after a state judge blocked the plan following a challenge from industry groups including the American Beverage Association.
The city’s Board of Health in September approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan to limit the size of sugary soft drinks sold in restaurants, movie theaters, stadiums and arenas to no more than 16 ounces (473 milliliters) a cup. In October, groups representing beverage makers, restaurants and theaters filed a petition in state court, seeking to block the measure. They called the ban “unprecedented interference” with consumer choice.

Soviet College Admission — My Dad's Story (1970)

Soviet College Admission — My Dad's Story (1970)

Sleepless nights at a train station and state-sponsored discrimination. This is the story of how my father came to finally attend college as a teenager in the Soviet Union.
In 1970 my father was 17 years old, living with his parents and brother in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He was interested in radio electronics, having built radios and clocks as a teenager. His father (my grandfather) was an electrical engineer, working at the time for the Uzbekistan Department of Auto-Transportation. My grandfather was a military man, having fought and been wounded at the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943. He encouraged my father to pursue a military career in electronics and telecommunication.

Apple’s iWatch Could Arrive By The End Of 2013, Says Bloomberg

Apple’s iWatch Could Arrive By The End Of 2013 $AAPL

"Apple’s iWatch is the new primary focus of speculation for the company’s unannounced products, and a newarticle at Bloomberg today detailing its market potential also let slip that the wrist-mounted computer could arrive by the end of this year. Bloomberg’s source, which is one of the same that leaked details about the team within Apple working on the iWatch, said Apple hopes to have the device out to market “as soon as this year.”
Bloomberg’s report today adds a bit more color about what we might expect to see from an Apple iWatch, too. The still-unconfirmed device would be able to make calls, check caller ID, relay map coordinates and carry a built-in pedometer and health monitoring sensors, according to the news publication’s source. That might mean another partnership with Nike for built-in fitness tracking, as we’ve seen in iPods and iPhones from the company to date.
The news comes after reports from Apple supply partners and Gorilla Glass manufacturer Corning said that products based on its flexible Willow Glass product wouldn’t come to market for another three years, prompting many to assume that meant an iWatch was also at least three years out. Apple had patented a wrist-mounted computer based on flexible display tech, but that’s far from the company’s only option for producing an iWatch – it could easily take a more traditional form, like thePebble smart watch."

National Archives: Searching for the Seventies

remarkable color photographs taken for a Federal photography project called Project DOCUMERICA

Created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), DOCUMERICA was born out of the decade’s environmental awakening, producing striking photographs of many of that era’s environmental problems and achievements. Drawing its inspiration from the depression era Farm Security Administration photography project, project photographers created a portrait of America in the early-and-mid-1970s. They documented small Midwestern towns, barrios in the Southwest, and coal mining communities in Appalachia. Their assignments were as varied as African American life in Chicago, urban renewal in Kansas City, commuters in Washington, DC, and migrant farm workers in Colorado. The exhibit, featuring 90 images from the project opens March 8, 2013 at the National Archives in Washington D.C. It runs through September 8, 2013. What follows is a small sampling of the collection digitized by the National Archives.

Putin's United Russia Promotes Anti-American Rally

With the U.S. going after Russia’s human rights record, Putin took American citizens to task after a couple of Russian adoptees were harmed while in the care of their new American families.  Many called it an odd retaliatory measure, used in protest against the Magnitsky Act which basically called out the country for being human rights violators.

A great day for British justice: Theresa May vows to take UK out of the European Court of Human Rights

Britain is set to pull out of the discredited European Convention on Human Rights that has allowed dangerous criminals and hate preachers to remain in the UK.
It marks a triumph for The Mail on Sunday’s campaign against the ludicrous abuses of justice carried out in the name of human rights.
The historic move, to be announced soon by Home Secretary Theresa May, would mean foreign courts could no longer meddle in British justice.
The European Convention has led to such hugely controversial decisions as banning the deportation of radical cleric Abu Qatada and giving British prisoners the right to vote.

Dr. Dean, a co-researcher, said the findings left no doubt in his mind that many German citizens, despite the frequent claims of ignorance after the war, must have known about the widespread existence of the Nazi camps at the time.

Among most polluted in US, NYC area awaits cleanup

Among most polluted in US, NYC area awaits cleanup

Just across the East River from midtown Manhattan's shimmering skyscrapers sits one of the nation's most polluted neighborhoods, fouled by generations of industrial waste, overflow from the city's sewage system and an underground oil leak bigger than the Exxon Valdez spill.
It's easy to see -- and smell -- the filth in and around Newtown Creek, which runs through an area of working-class homes, warehouses and industrial lots straddling Brooklyn and Queens. The odor of petroleum mixes with the smell of sewage, particularly on rainy days when the city's treatment plants can't handle the volume and municipal pipes send trash and human waste straight into the creek.

How to Never Take Life for Granted #SelfHelp #individual #SelfSunday

How to Never Take Life for Granted

"It's common to sit and contemplate how life is constantly fleeting away.

The fact that every situation, mood, and even the feeling of permanence itself is always suspect to withering away.

Nothing lasts forever.

There is a proverb in which Solomon wants to humble his minister.

In this story, Solomon orders his minister to find a “magic” ring that has the ability to turn a happy man sad and a sad man happy; Solomon of course knew there is no ring that wielded such a godly power.

Months go by and Solomon’s minister is still in search for the ring.

One day, he stumbles upon a merchant. He decides to try his luck and describes the ring to this man.

The merchant glances at a gold ring he owns and puts an engraving onto it. The minister pays the merchant with a huge smile on his face as he reads the engraving, believing he had finally completed his task.

Upon returning, Solomon amusedly asks for the ring. Of course, when the minister reveals a gold ring, everyone present was curious.

The smile from King Solomon quickly faded as he held the ring in his palm and read the engraving, “This too shall pass.”

This very phrase shook Solomon’s core and made him realize that even with all his wealth, power, and wisdom, they were all slowly fleeting away until he is nothing but a corpse. He had lost his disillusioned sense of permanence.

This story reminds you that nothing lasts forever and that you should learn to never take things for granted.

So how do you learn to appreciate what you currently have?

Live in the Present Moment

One of the easiest ways is to stay in the present even when you don’t want to. Stop time traveling back and forth between past and future. There’s no point in dwelling on the regrets and missed opportunities of the past, nor is there time to worry about how things could go wrong in the future.

When you accept that you are constantly in the present, you can begin to appreciate the small things in your life because things could be a lot worse.

Begin to really notice your surroundings because maybe in the future you may move somewhere not as beautiful or even worse than where you are now.

Listen to your friends when they talk. You’re lucky to have them in your life and you should be present for them because they deserve your full attention. One day may come in which circumstances tear you from your current luxuries.

Want What You Have

This is an idea that Stoicism teaches. To truly enjoy life and not take things for granted, Stoics teach to desire what you already have, truly eradicating all desires for more.

When you practice wanting what you already have, you don’t take your current pleasures for granted anymore because you are aware of how lucky you are. Even if you aren’t living large in a mansion with a huge paycheck, you can still consciously practice this. It is difficult to take anything for granted when you are thankful everyday.

You may practice a technique the Stoics call “negative visualization.” Envision the worst-case scenario in regards to what you have.

Truly imagine in your mind the idea of losing your loved ones, being homeless, and being ripped away from the comfort of life’s luxuries. Do this routinely and you will suddenly feel a sense of happiness when you realize you have more than enough.

Help others

Karma teaches that everything is a cycle in which you give and receive back what you put into it. Live life like this regardless of whether or not you believe in the concept of karma.

Actively trying to help others and bettering their lives makes you see beyond yourself. Maybe you won’t see the results of your goodwill immediately, but you’ll feel like life has much more to offer than material belongings.

Remind others who are down that “this too shall pass,” absolving them of their current struggles, while simultaneously reminding yourself that life is fleeting, so do well by others.

Carpe diem

Seize the day. Understand that nothing is ever permanent and internalize that message. Live every day like it’s your last and you won’t undervalue life because you know that any day you can lose it all.

You can’t take all of life’s gifts with you when you pass on from this world, so live each and every day to the fullest.

Don’t let the idea of life’s impermanence bring you down. It is a beautiful thing to be reminded of because it allows for you to live life without taking anything for granted.

Go out and get a poster, draw “This too shall pass” onto it. Look at it every day and cherish what you have.

You can start practicing the Stoic’s methods of negative visualization and one day you’ll become your ideal self.

You’ll become the rare individual that takes nothing for granted."

Setting Goals and Building Self Confidence Through Personal Development

Setting Goals and Building Self Confidence Through Personal Development

Building Self-Confidence Is Critical

In studying everything that has been written or said about personal development and success, the conclusion I came to was that your level of self-confidence is probably the critical factor in everything you accomplish. When you have enough self-confidence, you will try almost anything. Because success is largely a matter of averages, or probabilities, the more things you try, the more likely it is that you will achieve greatly.

Try More Things

The same is true for you. By setting goals, trying more things, engaging in more activities, and exploring more opportunities, your probabilities of success increase dramatically. The only real limiting step that you might have is your level of self-confidence. When you reach the point at which you believe in yourself absolutely, the barriers that exist in your external world will not stop you.

Is it permitted to bath naked in islam ? #Islamic #Muslim

"The scholars quoted this hadeeth as evidence that it is permissible to be naked when one is alone, especially if that is for a reason such as taking a bath. Most of the scholars regarded this as being permissible, as al-Haafiz said in al-Fath (1/385). Al-Bukhaari gave this chapter the title “Chapter on one who bathes naked when he is alone, although whoever covers himself, covering is preferable.” The fact that covering oneself is preferable is taken from the hadeeth which was narrated by the authors of Sunan and classed as hasan by al-Tirmidhi and as saheeh by al-Haakim, from Mu’aawiyah ibn Haydah, who said: “I said, ‘O Prophet of Allaah, when should we cover our ‘awrah and when may we uncover it?’ He said, ‘Protect (cover) your ‘awrah from everyone except your wife and those whom your right hand possesses (concubines)."

Are the monkeys and pigs that exist nowadays humans who have been transformed? #Islamic Islamic Answer

Are the monkeys and pigs that exist nowadays humans who have been transformed? #Islamic Islamic Answer

"Maskh (transformation) refers to the changing of a person’s exterior appearance. Allaah has told us in more than one place in the Qur’aan that He transformed some of the Children of Israel into monkeys as a punishment for their disobedience towards Allaah. Allaah says, addressing the Children of Israel (interpretation of the meaning):

“And indeed you knew those amongst you who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath (i.e. Saturday). We said to them: ‘Be you monkeys, despised and rejected.’

So We made this punishment an example to their own and to succeeding generations and a lesson to those who are Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)

This transformation was a punishment from Allaah to them for their doing that which Allaah had forbidden to them. This punishment was not exclusively for the Children of Israel, rather the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us that the Hour will not begin until such transformation happens among this ummah too. He issued this warning to those who disbelieve in the divine decree (al-qadr), and those who drink alcohol and listen to singing – we seek refuge with Allaah from that."

North Korea threatens South with "final destruction" - BUT OK For Iran to Constantly Threaten To Destroy Israel? #Doublestandards

North Korea threatens South with "final destruction" - BUT OK For Iran to Constantly Threaten To Destroy Israel? #Doublestandards

"As the saying goes, a new-born puppy knows no fear of a tiger. South Korea's erratic behavior would only herald its final destruction," North Korean diplomat Jon Yong Ryong told the meeting.
Jon's comments drew quick criticism from other nations, including South Korea, France, Germany and Britain, whose ambassador Joanne Adamson said such language was "completely inappropriate" and the discussion with North Korea was heading in the wrong direction.
"It cannot be allowed that we have expressions which refer to the possible destruction of U.N. member states," she said.
Spanish Ambassador Javier Gil Catalina said the comment left him stupefied and appeared to be a breach of international law.
"In the 30 years of my career I've never heard anything like it and it seems to me that we are not speaking about something that is even admissible, we are speaking about a threat of the use of force that is prohibited by Article 2.4 of the United Nations charter," Catalina said.
Since the North tested a nuclear bomb last week in defiance of U.N. resolutions, its southern neighbor has warned it could strike the isolated state if it believed an attack was imminent.
Pyongyang said the aim of the test was to bolster its defenses given the hostility of the United States, which has led a push to impose sanctions on North Korea.
"Our current nuclear test is the primary countermeasure taken by the DPRK in which it exercised its maximum self-restraint," said the North Korean diplomat Jon.
"If the U.S. takes a hostile approach toward the DPRK to the last, rendering the situation complicated, it (North Korea) will be left with no option but to take the second and third stronger steps in succession," he said, without indicating what that might entail.
North Korea has already told key ally China that it is prepared to stage one or two more tests this year to force the United States into diplomatic talks, a source with direct knowledge of the message told Reuters last week.

How To Brainstorm Business Ideas

How To Brainstorm Business Ideas

1. Ask Your Market

How To Brainstorm: The one best tip is always, always, always ask your list, your readers, your existing market what they need and want. And then remember…give them what they want but sell them what they need!
Thanks To: Elisabeth Donati of Creative Wealth International

2. The Ideal Way Of Brainstorming

How To Brainstorm: Our team here at Vasz Books, does something very unique. We tried to look for a quiet place in our office or outside the office in which we can brainstorm our ideas. Our group then gathers around, but prior to this taken place, we have asked everyone to work on their own ideas before the meeting takes place. Once we are all gathered around, we sub divide our topics of interest and begin brainstorming each others ideas. This is what is currently working for us, here at Vasz Books.
Thanks To: Vasz Books of Vasz Books

3. Be Crazy!

How To Brainstorm: Get together with a few other people and go nuts. Brainstorming is the time to be crazy. The wackier, more off-the-wall the ideas, the better. Hold your evaluation until the end and let the creative juices flow. It’s amazing how often silly ideas generate real solutions.
Thanks To: Stephen Balzac of 7 Steps Ahead, LLC

4. Look At The Best

How To Brainstorm: Look at the best and forget the rest. Look at what the biggest companies out there are doing. Even if they are not in your niche they all have something you can use. Many of these companies spend millions in research, all you need to spend is a few hours, a pen and pad. Write everything you like and give it your own touch to customize it. Google Trends is an excellent source for ideas like this considering how huge they are at this time.
Thanks To: Edwin Soler of Libreria Berea

5. Build Buzz To Brainstorm

How To Brainstorm: The ONE best tip for brainstorming great business ideas is to first begin by putting down in writing what it is that you’re looking to do. BE CLEAR. After you do this, share it with your team and others who may have great ideas about what it is you’re looking for. This could be students, social networks, family, friends, colleagues, etc. There is simply no substitute for calling upon many great minds “at no charge” to help you succeed in business!
Thanks To: Deborah Osgood of Knowledge Institute

6. Simple:make A Note Of Them

How To Brainstorm: An amazing part about ideas is that they are organic, like many other things in your schedule you can’t just set up an alert to get ideas for a particular time interval, they just come when they want to if you really want to keep a track get a notepad handy with yourself everywhere and noting them as soon as they come in your mind and take time every two days to brainstorm through those ideas, keeping a goal checklist in your mind and matching them with the right ideas…It really works…
Thanks To: Akash Sharma of Revenue Strategy Solutions Ltd.

7. Cocktail Anyone?

How To Brainstorm: To brainstorm ideas you need to be loose, happy, relaxed and with friends, family or colleagues that you trust. Call them to set up a time to get together over some beer or cocktails and brainstorm. Most of my brainstorming as been successful this way. When I sit in my office, think really hard, it adds pressure and I don’t think outside the box.
Thanks To: Susan Vernicek of S&J Identity – Identity Magazine

8. Get Inspired At A Trade Show

How To Brainstorm: Trade shows are great places to network AND see what’s new in your industry. Observing your competitors’ innovations may even stir your own creative juices!
Thanks To: Scott Swanay of Fantasy Baseball Sherpa

9. Find Your Entreprenessence

How To Brainstorm: My speciality is helping entrepreneurs of all levels brainstorm ideas and revenue streams to add to their business. I start by asking them to define their entreprenessence – the essence of their business – the philosophy and core values that comprise their business mission. Are they currently fulfilling this? if not we step back and help them re-evaluate, if they are, what natural services and/or products could be developed into info products and services that further extend their brand?
Thanks To: Susan M. Baker of Escape Hatcher

10. Break The Mould

How To Brainstorm: A really simple way to brainstorm in 3 easy steps.
1. Get out of the office, go somewhere new.
2. Invite business contacts and friends to support the effort (new minds means better thinking)
3. Remember anything goes, build on things don’t ever pull them down.
Thanks To: Marc Lawn of The Business GP

11. Create A Market Research Team

How To Brainstorm: Look at who you know, pick a variety of talent and ask them if they would serve on your special Market Research Team to run ideas and strategies by. Share with them these ideas and ask for feedback, sometimes we are too close to things and do not see all possibilities and this will allow you to step deeper outside the box and your friends will be honored that you thought enough about them and their expertise to ask them to be a part of your special Team. I have used this for years & it works.
Thanks To: Robbie Motter of Contacts Unlimited

12. Buy Coffee For A Mentor

How To Brainstorm: I have been teaching small business people how to succeed for many decades. I regularly invite my successful graduates to speak to my current students. I always find that the graduates are willing to return because they are having trouble improving a single aspect of their business. As recompense for their time, they ask me what I have heard that others are doing to solve the same problem. I can usually suggest four excellent opportunities that they have never heard of in about five minutes.
Thanks To: Donald Mitchell of The 400 Year Project

13. Just Ask!

How To Brainstorm: I find that seeking the advice and counsel from your customers and prospects is a great way to brainstorm business ideas. When we were writing the business plan for VR, we frequently met with small business owners to gain their input into our offering. The information we obtained was invaluable in putting together the final product. Customers and prospects will always dictate where you go with your business.
Thanks To: John Panico of Virtual Resources, LLC

14. Hit The Road, Jack

How To Brainstorm: I often get my best business ideas by listening to business books on CD in the car while I am taking my son to school, running errands. I just need to remember to keep a note pad in my purse to help me document the ideas that come to mind as I drive (well after I pull over anyway;).
